Every manuscript deserves respect. Every writer’s voice should be heard. I will never change your voice or your vision. I may advise, I may suggest, and I may even occasionally strongly recommend but I will never treat your words with anything less than my utmost respect.
You see, I’m an author as well. I’ve been where you are right now and I know how hard it can be to trust someone else with your words.
I offer three levels of editing services. Not sure which one you need? We’ll chat, either by phone, Skype, or email. I offer a free sample edit of up to 2000 words so you can see my editing style, and I can evaluate your writing. Because every manuscript and every author are different, the prices quoted here are ranges.
A developmental (or dev) edit looks for problems with story structure, plot, pacing, and genre requirements. During your developmental edit, I’ll read your entire manuscript at least once, and sometimes twice. Along the way, I’ll make notes using Word’s comment feature and suggest ways you could tighten up a scene, make a character more or less likeable, and point out anywhere a plot thread remains unresolved (it happens to the best authors).
I’ll also ensure your manuscript meets the genre requirements. For example, all romances must end in a happy-ever-after or a happy-for-now and all events in a memoir must be factual.
When you receive the completed dev edit, I’ll send back a one or two-page editing letter detailing the areas your manuscript shines as well as where it could use a little work. I offer a one-hour phone, Skype, or chat session to go over any questions you might have.
Pricing & Turnaround
Developmental editing ranges from $0.012/word to $0.015/word. For a 50,000-word manuscript, your cost would be between $600 and $750. Typical turnaround time for a 50,000-word manuscript is two weeks, based on availability.
A line edit is primarily concerned with your prose. Do your sentences flow from one to another with ease? Are passive verbs kept to a minimum? Do your chapters begin with a punch and end leaving readers begging for more?
In a line edit, I go through your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb. I correct minor issues, such as incorrect punctuation marks, homonym confusion, grammar issues, and the occasional repeated word.
All corrections are done using Word’s track changes feature, giving you the chance to accept or reject each one. During a line edit, most of my suggestions will be in the form of comments.
I’ll offer possible options for rephrasing sentences or clauses, point out inconsistencies (there’s always a tiny bit of developmental editing in every line edit), and do a light fact check.

Line editing ranges from $0.015/word to $0.017/word. For a 50,000-word manuscript, your cost would be between $750 and $850. Typical turnaround time for a 50,000-word manuscript is three weeks, based on availability.
A copy edit is the final phase of editing. This stage only looks for issues with grammar and punctuation. I’ll make changes using Word’s track changes feature. I’ll also leave comments if there’s a place in the manuscript that needs a heavier touch, or that I believe could benefit from a heavier line edit.

The Complete Editing Package
For authors who want both developmental editing and line editing, I offer a reduced rate package. You’ll receive two complete editing passes—one for developmental editing and one for line editing. After the dev pass, I’ll send you my editing letter and your revised manuscript. You’ll make the changes you agree with, push back on those you don’t, and we’ll chat from time to time as you do so. I’ll never leave you with unresolved questions. When you’re done, you’ll return the manuscript to me, and I’ll do a line editing pass.
